Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, has been visiting the court a lot lately. Why? Because of Depp and Heard case, where the famous wife-beater allegations that were put on him by his ex-wife, Amber Heard. It goes back to 2016 when Heard filed for divorce from Depp and accused him of physical abuse. Divorce was finalized in 2017 and since 2018 Heard propagated the domestic abuse issue. Depp sued Heard for false accusations in 2019 and phone recordings were leaked in 2020 in which Heard admitted physical abuse over Depp.
The court fight between the Pirate and the Atlantean has been going on multiple fronts but it recently took another turn. In mid-2020, Depp fought again a U.K newspaper, The Sun, over a 2018 article that labelled him wife beater which started a libel trial. It ended with a ruling against the actor; the prosecutor appealed but recently the U.K denied that appeal.
The court called the trial was fair and justified and defended the judge’s decision saying it “has not been shown even arguably to be vitiated by any error of approach or mistake of law”. The Depp team claims that Heard has still fully donated the $7 million amount that was settled at the time of divorce. They further state that she lied in court but the court didn’t find enough evidence to let the petition go forward. Media reports indicate that the court was unable to found evidence to accept that judge’s decision was influence by the statements; at times when the mystery regarding whether the statements were misleading or not was left open.
Depp was asked to step down as Grindelwald from the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” as a result of the failed libel case which was a major blow to the actor. The libel case verdict favoured Heard since they claim to have found evidence of physical abuse against Depp.
This news may only seem to have stopped a court war between the two at one end but there are other hearings as well. In April 2022, there is a defamation lawsuit hearing by Depp against Heard which is based on the Washington Post editorial where Heard mentioned the domestic abuse she had to face since their marriage. Although she never openly mentioned the abuser’s name in it, her fans and supporters linked the case to him. On the other hand, Heard has also filed a defamation countersuit against Depp. She claims that Depp’s legal team is targeting her to get her fired from Aquaman 2 similar to when Depp lost his role as Jack Sparrow from the famous Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after the editorial post.
Since the libel case is almost at its end and the next court hearing is almost a year away, no further news might emerge regarding the two for the rest of 2021. There may be small news regarding them but for that, we’ll have to wait for it to come.
